General Dentistry > Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth to protect what remains of the tooth structure, providing you with a strong, long-lasting layer of protection between your tooth and your mouth.

Dental crowns are used to treat teeth that have lost a significant part of its structure, which can happen as a result of tooth decay or the failure of a large filling. In some cases, dental crowns can also be used on teeth that have been worn down to the extent of vulnerability.

The evolution of dental crowns

Historically, many crowns that were placed on teeth towards the back of the mouth were made out of gold. This was convenient as gold is a very strong material, but aesthetically the results were not very pleasing. For front teeth, it became possible to bond porcelain to a metal inner layer so that the crown was tooth-coloured, although many cases produced mismatched colouring. This occurred due to the difficulties of hiding the metal beneath the porcelain part of the crown.

These porcelain bonded crowns (PBCs) are still used at both the front and the back of the mouth but, as dental technology has improved, it is now possible to achieve much more aesthetically pleasing results.

It is also possible now to make very strong, tooth-coloured dental crowns without any metal inner layer being used at all. These advanced ceramic crowns can look fantastic when a professional dentist installs the crown with the characteristics of a natural tooth. For the pinnacle of perfect results, ceramic dental crowns tend to be the best choice.
